Look What I Found In Teen Vogue!
My daughter is waaay more into academics than she is into fashion. Since I believe in balance :), I she has a subscription to Teen Vogue. How cool is it that I found an endorsement of natural hair while thumbing through the pages of the latest teen fashions!?! While the styles are a little eccentric, except the left side of the second photo (I'm partial to shaved sides =D) It's great that us wearing our hair naturally is now considered fashionable. It's also mainstream enough to be featured in a non-black magazine!
My involvement in the natural hair community has made my daughter accept her natural hair. This is a HUGE deal because this is the little girl I would send to daycare at age 2 with an afro puff and by the time I picked her up, she'd have it braided. It would be sticking straight up like a unicorn, but the daycare teacher would explain to me that my baby was so bothered by it that she wouldn't participate in any activities until it was braided! Knowing this about her, I finally allowed her to get a relaxer in middle school. Especially after hearing all the Tia, she's not you comments... I decided to stop giving her relaxers in January. Strangely enough she's ready to do the big chop, but I'd rather wait. Maybe she'll have a new look at the beginning of the year?!
XoXo,
Tia Lou
